Re: Children's Author Academy
Dear Accomplished or Aspiring Author,
First off, let me just say that I don't have anything against bartenders. I've created some long-lasting friendships during the seven years I served drinks at one of the most famous destinations in the world, South Beach, Florida.
However, my family couldn't understand why as a college graduate I chose to have a job mixing drinks. My mom now jokes that with my degree in Sociology, I moved to South Beach to practice being social! In a way she was right.
One New York Times best selling book later, I've begun to figure out why I spent those seven years as a bartender.
You might already know this, but. . .
When I was 11 years-old, I lost my hair to a condition called Alopecia Areata. It was then that I started wearing wigs to hide my baldness. It was a “secret” that I let consume me and strip me of every ounce of self-esteem. I found myself hiding out…trying to fill the void with what became a pretty self-destructive lifestyle. I had decided at a very young age that because of this condition I would never be able to accomplish any of the things I dreamed of. Looking back now, I know this was MY OWN FEAR getting in my way. . .but it didn't matter. It was the world I created for myself.
I didn’t feel worthy enough to pursue my own dreams back then, let alone believe that I would ever be a New York Times Bestseller. I Share that with you because I know a lot of you hear that voice that says “Who am I to write a book?!” I want you to know that I heard that same voice and mine was on loud speaker!!
A Small Prayer Leads To A Big Idea
Fast forward to my bartending days, in November of 1997 where I found myself in Hartford, CT at the opening of a night club…
After the party and back at the hotel, I was unable to sleep and strangely I found myself saying a prayer for someone special to me—my sister. I say this is strange because I hadn’t actually prayed in a long time. It was one of those end of the night, “Dear God, please watch over my sister” type prayers. My sister was a younger mother than she expected to be and she was now pregnant with her second child and her husband had just moved out. I know I was feeling a bit helpless hundreds of miles away, which I guess is why I found myself praying.
But stranger still, as I began praying for my sister, I heard a very clear voice that said:
"Your sister is fine. Pray for your nephew."
This was REALLY weird, but I did as I was told and began praying for my nephew! After all, he was one of the most precious people in my life.
As I prayed, my entire being became filled with this surreal experience of energy and light, followed by another inspiration. I received an idea for AN ENTIRE CHILDREN'S BOOK! It was amazing. It was as if the idea for this book had been downloaded into my mind and heart!
"But I know absolutely NOTHING about writing, editing, publishing, or marketing children's books!" I thought.
For whatever reason. .. call it timing, call it divine order, or call it just plain naïveté', I decided to GO FOR IT. Something inside me gave me the strength... and the blind faith to believe that, just maybe, I could actually write and publish this book. Maybe this was what I was meant to do. And I knew in my heart I wanted to write this book for my nephew, Tyler. I wanted him to know how very truly loved he was, regardless of what was going on in his world and the world around him!
Somehow, I developed the desire to listen AND follow that small voice within me, which kept sending me little signs that I was on the right track.
Today, I believe I was divinely inspired to write I Love You More and spread the message of love around the world.
But that's not all. The story gets better. . . A few weeks before my 30th birthday. . .
I Decided to Throw ALL My Wigs Away!

That's the day I became "The Bald Chick" and, I have to tell you, it has been the most FREEING experience of my life.
I threw away all my wigs and instead of worrying about "my secret", I dove into learning everything I could about how to write, edit, market, illustrate, promote AND sell my book and proceeded to sell 179,000 copies of I Love You More with my illustrator, Karen Keesler.
We learned everything about book publishing and marketing through trial and error. . .and because we didn't know all the "rules", we broke some of them and made self-publishing history. We then went through the process of bringing on an agent and publisher and through our combined marketing efforts; our book became a New York Times Bestseller. . .
I Know How Hard It Was Getting Started, So

If You Have A Great Idea For A Children's Book,
But Don’t Know Where To Start, I Can Help
Almost every day someone either calls or emails me, saying they have a great idea for a book. ..but they don’t know how to get it out of their head and into a real, live manuscript. The whole process of writing, publishing and marketing completely overwhelms them.
Can you imagine how many people never realize their dream of getting their book published?
Whether you're a teacher, parent, grandparent or student, I want to work with you to get your book into the hearts, homes and classrooms of people who will love, enjoy and appreciate your message.
Like I said, it wasn’t so long ago that I was in the same place, blessed with an amazing idea for a book, with absolutely no idea of how to get started.
Listening to Laura's passion, I realized that it is my destiny to fulfill my creative vision. My takeaway is that passion will trump limited resources any day of the week. Moreover, passion will create resources that you didn't even know were there. . . Thank you again, Laura. You are a master at inspiring others and authenticity. Too bad we can't clone you!

I Love To Share My Story Because I Want
You To Know. . .If I Can Do It, So Can YOU!
I finally knew that I had to get this message into the world. That it was somehow unfair if I kept it to myself. I wrote and rewrote and finally got my book out of my head and onto paper and then after much editing, with the help of my mom, a kindergarten teacher for 38 ½ years, and the whole process of illustration, we sent our book, “I Love You More” out to several agents and publishers, only to receive an equal amount of rejection slips. This process didn’t feel right to me.
There was something missing, so I began working with a life coach who in turn introduced me to a book coach who told me, "You need to self-publish!" I thought he was crazy!!! I was an unemployed bartender with no writing, publishing or marketing experience. But I followed my intuition and his certainty and did what he said. The rest, as they say, is publishing history. Are you ready to get started?
Self-publishing turned out to be a great way to get my book a following, which eventually led to my great agent, editor and publisher.

I’ll Give You A Hint Of How I Did It...
I read dozens of books on how to make your book a best seller, attended just as many seminars, coached and consulted with experts and in the end rolled up my sleeves and got to work turning my book into a major bestseller. Now with over 250,000 copies sold and my next book in the works for Fall ’10 release…I want to walk you through the step-by-step process of making YOUR book a best seller!
I’m Now Ready To Share My Publishing
Secrets With A Few Lucky Authors
I have coached and consulted with dozens of authors, literally taking them by the hand and walking them through the process that helped me make my book a New York Times bestseller. And though I love working with authors one-on-one, I just can’t keep up with the requests anymore! So, I’m holding a 6-week Tele-Course, titled “The Children’s Author Academy”. In this course, I will share everything you need to know to climb up the ranks to “New York Times Best Selling Author” status!
Laura, you are proof that enthusiasm, determination, smart and focused work and a sense of humor will work! Every time I’ve found myself feeling any doubt over the last 3 weeks, I think to myself “Laura sold 180K on her own and she didn’t do it overnight. I can too! Keep going!”

Introducing:
“The Children’s Author Academy”
Discover the A, B, C's and 1, 2, 3’s of Writing, Publishing
AND Marketing Your Book to Best Seller Status
Who this program is for…
- Aspiring authors who have an idea for a book and who need help in creating their best work possible
- People who have a book written and are trying to decide between the traditional publishing route or self-publishing
- Authors ready to self-publish and want the 1, 2, 3 steps…push to get started
- Authors who have a great book but just aren't sure how to move them out of their warehouse or garage!
- Self-Published authors who are looking to transition to a major publisher and are interested in the how-to’s, benefits and drawbacks.
Who this program is NOT for. . .
Hmmmm, how to say this nicely? Becoming a bestseller is not a hobby, and it’s not something you pursue “just because”.
I’m not saying that there’s anything wrong with writing for the fun or experience of writing. Writing is a very healthy, cathartic, expressive thing to do. In fact, some people write frequently, but have no desire to turn their writing into a book that THEY will MARKET…(which is what it will take IF you want to reach more than just a few friends and family members).
And, please keep in mind that the days are pretty much GONE of publishers doing all the marketing for you, even if you’re lucky enough to get published by one.
In addition, some people are happy just to have their work in print (this program will get you there for sure).
However, “The Children’s Author Academy” Tele-course is for you if you believe your book AND its message are meant to be out in the world and IF you’re willing to do what it takes to make it happen.
I hope I haven’t scared you too much. This process can actually be a lot of fun! Marketing your book is a creative process. . . and you might discover that you enjoy promoting and marketing your book as much as you did writing it!
Join Me This October For My 3rd Session Of

You will also discover how we:

“What Specifically Will We Talk About On Each Call?”
Call Number One:
The A, B, C’s of writing your book:
- Getting your inspiration out of your heart and head and onto paper and into book form.
- Editing…creating your best work possible. Don’t be fooled. It takes a special talent to capture a message in only a few words in a children’s book.

Calls Number Two and Three:
The 1, 2, 3’s of Publishing and Self-Publishing:

- Everything you need to know and do to get your own publishing company up and running
- What an editor is looking for...how to write for your market and the retail buyers
Call Numbers Four and Five:
“Bringing Your Book to Market”: Why writing and publishing your book is 20% and Marketing and Promotion is the other 80%:
Whether you self-publish or pursue a publisher, YOU STILL HAVE TO MARKET YOUR OWN BOOK. Publishers are looking for you to team up with them to provide the marketing necessary to make your book a best seller.
- The traditional market…getting ready for bookstore sales
- Getting the most from Promotional Copies
- Associations, Trade shows, seminars and conferences
- Endorsements, Reviews and Awards…how to leverage

- Creating your web presence
- Saturating Cyberspace: Getting “Bloggers” to write about you

I’m still keeping these fees low (for now) because I know consulting may be something you wish to pursue along your path to becoming a published author.

During the "Children's Author Academy" not only did I learn a wealth of information about bringing my book to market, but also about the ABCs of writing and the 123s of publishing. Laura is very articulate and has so much experience and knowledge to share about publishing and marketing a children's book. She was available to answer all my questions, and her enthusiasm about becoming a best selling author is contagious! After completing the "Children's Author Academy" I feel that I have a solid understanding of the whole writing, publishing and marketing process, and also a tremendous resource base to draw information from. I highly recommend Laura's "Children's Author Academy" to anyone who wants to become a best-selling children's author!!

I decided to participate in the "Children's Author Academy" because I know Laura and she is a dynamo! I also know that she is a self-made winner and can speak authentically from experience.
Before signing up for the "Children's Author Academy" my project was a dream that was half-baked. My art career had taken off but I was unsure of whether to take the leap into writing, now.
Now one of my projects is almost done. The illustrations will be finalized in a couple of months. I have brought the other one out again. It had been a tremendous success as a children's interactive, musical production. It is time to bring the book aspect to children to enjoy.
My biggest accomplishment or 'a-ha' was when Laura emphasized that we will find our market if we open ourselves up. That also confirmed my motivation for getting involved with the project. As Mother Teresa stated, we can do no great things, only small things with great love. To me, "The Luckiest Penny" is not like the huge entertainment spectacles that I used to put on. Yet, it continues to speak to my heart and the mission behind it continues to inspire me.
Specifically, this is what happened for me during the "Children's Author Academy." As mentioned, I had a solid plan--launch my art career and then take the profits to create an entertainment enterprise, which included some of the books and musicals that I created for children. However, the economy changed midstream which meant I did not have the capital I had originally expected. Yet, listening to Laura's passion, I realized that it is my destiny to fulfill my creative vision anyway. My takeaway is that passion will trump limited resources any day of the week. Moreover, passion will create resources that you didn't even know were there. . .
Thank you again, Laura. You are a master at inspiring others and authenticity. Too bad we can't clone you!

I decided to participate in the "Children's Author Academy" because of Laura’s success as a self published children’s author. I’ve read a lot of books and done a lot of courses but none of them were focused on children’s book success, especially from a self publishing perspective.
Before signing up for the "Children's Author Academy" my project was in production and about to deliver in Australia and the US. Now my project is since delivered and I’ve had 3 weeks of selling. My biggest accomplishment or `a-ha' was (learning about the) children’s specialty stores. My sales strategy is now beyond the book store due to their deep discounts and returns policy. It was exciting to learn that specialty stores have smaller discounts, pay freight in store and are final sales. My book is perfect for this market.
I was able to tune in to about 40% of the calls but listened to them all and read all of the blog posts. I was inspired by Laura – not only from her ideas but primarily from her experience.

I decided to participate in the "Children's Author Academy" because........
I was undecided about how to take my book out into the world. What steps to take? What don't I know? Before signing up for the "Children's Author Academy" my project was.......In my studio. Now my project is ......In the hands of three NY editors.
My biggest accomplishment or `a-ha' was ......Deciding that my book is to reach millions and that someone like Marianne Williamson or Deepak Chopra could endorse it. I had thought that being a no-name in the publishing industry was a limiting factor I had no control over. I learned that getting endorsements from people with names can over come the no-name limit. I started thinking of my book as valuable to a much larger audience. I pushed it out into the world for the first time.
